In the end, playing Bookworm on DS is sort of the video game equivalent of reading a dictionary. Unfortunately, the rooms don’t do anything special besides providing different backgrounds for the upper screen. With 18 rooms to unlock in total, word freaks have extra motivation pulling them through weeks of play. As your home grows in size, subsequent renovations require more time and better words. Whether you’re playing in Classic or Action mode, every word you find will slowly fill up bookshelves that in turn unlock rooms and decorations in your house. What will consume many hours of your time is the new house building meta-game. The options for this mode are extremely limited, though, and without any online play it’s unlikely that you’ll spend a ton of time with it. An ad hoc multiplayer mode allows you to play against a friend, taking turns finding words on separate boards in a score race. The cartridge version includes the frantic, timed Action mode and a library that keeps track of words you’ve found in the game in 20 different books ranging from “Clothing” to “Vegetables.”Īlong with the new word tracking, two key features differentiate this Bookworm from the original PC version. The DSiWare version reduces the already-slim game to only the Classic mode. Now, for the first time, the game is available in two forms for the Nintendo DS: a retail release that adds multiplayer and a trimmed down DSiWare download. Serving as a literary masterpiece amongst a sea of eye-catching but intellectually shallow casual games, the Bookworm series has beckoned players to piece together words for points since the original game launched in 2003. I’m not bragging if anything, it makes me sad that this nerdy effort earlier in my life doesn’t aid my Bookworm ability. I read a full page of the thick Webster’s volume I had every day for a month or two until I got frustrated with the endeavor. If you want to try the game before buying, play Bookworm online. As a young kid obsessed with words, I decided that the surest path to being a great writer was to read the dictionary. Bookworm ported beautiful to the iPhone.īookworm for the iPhone retails for $4.99. You don’t have the added stress of creating words on the first try with timing as a factor. So imagine selecting multiple tiles to only have it mess up on you. Whether you have a small finger, tapping the specific tile doesn’t always take or select the right one. I won’t give away the other bonus book topics as it’s a fun surprise that keeps you captivated. Anytime you find a pet in the grid, it goes into the book. If you select “dog,” then you’ll start a new bonus book collection of Pets. The game also tracks many stats including Bonus Book Lists, which I’ve never seen before this one. The graphics are gorgeous optimizing the iPhone’s sleek interface. Screenshots from Bookworm for iPhone by PopCap Games However, you can expect a bunch of fiery tiles to appear whenever you scramble. If you’re stuck or have way too many I’s and other useless letters, you can scramble the tiles. Also, green and gold glowing letters appear for added bonus points when you make words with them. If you don’t make a word with the fiery tile before it reaches the bottom, the library burns down and the game is over. When you find the bonus word, you score – what else? – bonus points.įiery tiles show up at random times more often as you progress. Lex also provides a three-lettered bonus word. If the tiles don’t touch, you can’t select them. The goal is to create words by selecting adjoining tiles. The game reveals a grid with seven columns of random letters. Both modes are the same with the exception of the time factor. Let me back up and explain how the game works. Longer words mean more points and bonuses. Timed mode makes it harder to come up with longer words as you’re in a rush. However, sometimes the game thinks you touched a different letter or messes up and erases your selection. It makes sense for the iPhone to come with Timed mode because it’s easier to select letters than on other devices. It’s stressful for those who don’t like to race especially when the burning tiles show up often. Of course, timed means working that finger fast and furious to select letters to make a word. Bookworm for the iPhone comes with two modes: Classic and Timed. For instance, the BlackBerry version doesn’t come with a timed game mode. How to Play BookwormĮvery handheld version has a slight variation. Lex, the bookworm, stands by ready for tasty food in the form of letters. The iPhone version is gorgeous and the best one, in my humble opinion, of all the handheld platforms.īookworm looks like someone put Scrabble, Boggle and Tetris together and added Lex as the cherry on top. In fact, I have Bookworm for the BlackBerry and PalmOS. I’ve played Bookworm on different platforms.
